Japhet Myaba is a Lecturer at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in the School of Nursing-Mental Health department in Malawi. He holds a Bachelor of Science Clinical Medicine-Mental Health from Saint John of God College of Health Sciences an affiliate of Mzuzu University in Malawi. He also holds a Master of Public Health from University of Malawi, and a Master of Philosophy in Public Mental Health from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is currently a PhD Fellow in Public Mental Health at KUHeS, funded by the African Mental Health Research Initiative (AMARI) II.
Japhet has supervised undergraduate mental health research students and co-supervised Masters students. Currently, he is coordinating a Perinatal mental health research project for KUHeS under eMAMA research project which is a Consortium project carried out in Malawi, Namibia and Zambia with partner Turku University of Applied Sciences of Finland. The focus of the project is developing a postgraduate training program on maternal mental health.
Japhet has been involved in different mental health research projects and has contributed to publications in peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include child and adolescent mental health, perinatal mental health, and development and evaluation of psychological interventions.
Japhet’s PhD work focuses on adolescent mental health, specifically adaptation of a psychological intervention for adolescents living with HIV aiming at prevention of psychological distress in urban Malawi.
