Angella Mainjeni-Mwambula is a mental health lead at the Malawi Epidemiology Intervention and Research Unit (MEIRU), a research-based organization focusing on non-communicable diseases and mental health. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine-Mental Health from Saint John of God College of Health Sciences, an affiliate of Mzuzu University in Malawi. She also holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Malawi and is currently a PhD Fellow in Public Mental Health at KUHeS, funded by the African Mental Health Research Initiative (AMARI) II.
Currently, she is coordinating a mental health research project for the Generation Malawi Project under the Malawi Epidemiology Intervention and Research Unit, an affiliate of KUHeS. Generation Malawi focuses on recruiting women and their spouses, following them from pregnancy to delivery, and then following up the children born to these parents until they are two years old. The aim is to establish if mental health problems in women during the perinatal period are also manifested in their children.
She has been involved in different mental health research projects and has contributed to publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her research interests include child and adolescent mental health, perinatal mental health, and the validation and screening of measures for children and adults.
Her PhD work focuses on children's mental health, specifically evaluating the impact of parental mental health and other risk factors on the mental health of children in urban Malawi.
