This workshop teaches participants essential skills for using media to disseminate their work and engage in research debate. The course covers tips for getting your message across to a mainstream (non-scientific) audience quickly and clearly, how to tackle questions, and how best to use digital platforms (such as Twitter) to generate and curate content relevant to your research interests. There is also material on digital publication (including tips on avoiding ‘predatory’ journals), open access publishing, and data-sharing platforms. Materials are available both for a short online course (1.5-hour webinar) or a longer (half-day) in-person practical workshop.
The Media Dissemination workshop was developed by Dr Vaughan Bell of University College London, who is an established science writer in the UK national press, a prolific blogger and tweeter, who has built a following in excess of 50,000 on Twitter. Vaughan can also be contacted directly via his website: vaughanbell.net.
