Academic Writing Skills

This workshop was originally developed as a five-day residential and experiential course, to teach the theory of effective written communication, interspersed with several dedicated ‘writing time’ periods per day, after which participants would receive feedback on their work from a trained facilitator and from peers. While this may be logistically unfeasible for many, we present the materials here for visitors to ‘dip into’ for bite-sized coaching input on their academic writing. The aim is to build skills in writing for publication, helping participants to develop a professional, formal, academic style designed to support successful submission to peer-reviewed academic journals. However, additional styles of writing are also covered, and may support other related courses in our ACES series, such as grant-writing skills and media dissemination. The academic writing course was developed by Dr Helen Jack of University of Washington (also a visiting researcher at King’s College London).
