Work-Life Balance

This short workshop sets out the challenge of managing numerous activities and responsibilities as a researcher, explaining how stress can result from overload. It then presents three techniques for activity management (noting why ‘time’ management is a myth) - including memory aids, a prioritisation tool (Eisenhower matrix), and a project planning tool (Gantt chart). A series of ideas and tips for helping with productivity, efficiency and balance is then presented - including boundary setting, scheduling, rest, rewards and how to implement change. The slide materials are designed to be delivered alongside short talks from established researchers on their own challenges of finding balance. Where possible, a group discussion can be held where early-career researchers can ask more experienced researchers questions on work-life balance in an open and safe space (interview questions to stimulate discussion are provided below). Challenges with finding balance also make good topics for discussion in mentoring relationships - see our workshop on Peer Mentoring for more details.
